Tata Punch has crossed the 6 lakh production mark in less than 4 years, with 60% of buyers being first-time car owners. Available in ICE, CNG, and EV variants, the micro SUV continues to lead in the entry-level SUV segment.

Tata Motors has achieved a new production milestone with its compact SUV, the Tata Punch. Since its launch in October 2021, the Punch has rolled out over 6 lakh units from the production line, making it the fastest SUV in the country to reach this figure. What’s more impressive is that this number has been achieved in under four years, a timeline that underlines the growing popularity of compact SUVs in India and the trust buyers place in Tata’s smallest SUV.
The cumulative production figure includes not only the ICE (internal combustion engine) variants but also the iCNG and electric versions of the Punch. The Punch.ev, which joined the lineup in January 2024, has contributed significantly to this achievement. Interestingly, Tata also confirmed that the Punch became the highest-selling passenger car in the country in calendar year 2024 — a first for any Tata model.
Sales data shows a clear growth trend. The Punch crossed the 1 lakh mark by August 2022, touched 2 lakh in May 2023, reached 3 lakh by December 2023, and quickly scaled to 4 lakh by July 2024. The 5 lakh mark followed in January 2025, and now, the 6 lakh production milestone has been officially reached as of July 2025.
According to Tata Motors, the Punch now contributes to 36% of its total passenger vehicle sales and commands a strong 38% market share in the sub-4 metre SUV segment for FY2025. This highlights the vehicle’s significance in the brand’s portfolio and its growing footprint across urban and semi-urban markets.
Demographics also paint an interesting picture. Tata revealed that 70% of Punch buyers are first-time car owners — a strong indicator of the model’s appeal as a practical, value-driven entry into the SUV space. In the EV segment, 25% of Punch.ev customers are women, reflecting a broader adoption of electric mobility across diverse buyer groups. Regionally, 42% of Punch sales come from Tier II cities, while Tier I and Tier III cities contribute 24% and 34%, respectively.
Currently, the Punch is available in multiple powertrain configurations. The ICE version uses a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 86.5 bhp and 115 Nm of torque, offered with both manual and AMT gearboxes. The CNG variant uses the same engine but delivers a slightly lower output of 72.5 bhp and 103 Nm of torque when running on CNG, and is available only with a manual transmission.
The Punch.ev, on the other hand, comes with two battery and motor combinations. The base version gets a 60 kW motor with a 25 kWh battery, offering a claimed range of 265 km, while the higher version features a 90 kW motor with a 35 kWh battery pack that can go up to 365 km on a single charge.

In terms of pricing (ex-showroom), the Punch ICE range starts at ₹6.20 lakh and goes up to ₹12.01 lakh. The CNG variants are priced between ₹7.29 lakh and ₹10.16 lakh. For those opting for the electric version, prices start at ₹9.99 lakh and top out at ₹14.44 lakh.
Commenting on the achievement, Vivek Srivatsa, Chief Commercial Officer, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., said, “The Punch embodies the spirit of a new India — bold, self-assured, and ready to forge its own path. Crossing the 6 lakh milestone is more than a production achievement; it’s a reflection of the immense trust that over 6 lakh Indians have placed in a vehicle that represents confidence, presence, and a fresh start to their journeys.”
