BMW R 1300 RT Unveiled Globally

BMW has expanded its R 1300 boxer-twin range with the introduction of the new R 1300 RT touring motorcycle. This model replaces the previous R 1250 RT launched in 2019 and brings numerous updates in terms of styling and technology. With a focus on delivering the ultimate touring experience, the R 1300 RT features adjustable side trim for improved weather protection, a taller front screen, and a fresh, sharp design language.

Engine and Performance

The R 1300 RT retains the 1,300 cc liquid-cooled boxer-twin engine from the R 1300 GS, generating the same power output of 143.5 bhp at 7,750 rpm and peak torque of 149.14 Nm at 6,500 rpm. The engine has a rev limit of 9,000 rpm and is integrated into a new chassis, which pairs a sheet steel mainframe with an aluminium lattice subframe. This setup contributes to the motorcycle’s structural rigidity while maintaining balanced performance.

Despite the R 1300 RT’s 281 kg kerb weight, it offers an accessible seat height of 780 mm, ensuring comfort for a wide range of riders. The suspension setup includes electronically adjustable Telelever front and Paralever rear systems, offering 149 mm and 158 mm of travel, respectively.

Touring Features and Comfort

The R 1300 RT places a heavy emphasis on comfort for long-distance touring. The bike comes with a 27-litre side case as standard, and there is an option for the expandable Vario boxes, which can store up to 33 litres per side. Other luggage options include a 39-litre and a 54-litre top box, with the larger box featuring a heated backrest for the pillion.

To improve the overall ride, the bike features redesigned 17-inch cast aluminium wheels that are 1.4 kg lighter than those on the previous model. The handlebars are also slightly moved forward to optimize rider ergonomics.

Technology and Safety Features

On the tech front, the R 1300 RT comes with three standard riding modes, along with optional ‘Dynamic’ and ‘Dynamic Pro’ modes, along with a quickshifter for smoother gear changes. Engine drag torque control is standard, which helps prevent rear wheel lock-ups during downshifts, ensuring safer rides in various conditions.

Additionally, BMW has equipped the R 1300 RT with a radar system, similar to the one found on the R 1300 GS Adventure. Positioned below the windscreen, the radar offers advanced features like adaptive cruise control, front collision warning, blind spot detection, and rear collision warning, further enhancing the bike’s safety and convenience for long-distance journeys.
