While excitement builds around the iPhone 17 series, a new report hints at major changes coming in Apple’s 2026 iPhone lineup. The iPhone 18 series is set to introduce not just updated Pro models, but also the long-anticipated foldable iPhone and more budget-friendly versions, bringing the total to six new devices.
Two-Stage Launch Strategy for iPhone 18 Series
According to a report from The Information, Apple may overhaul its typical launch format for the iPhone 18 lineup. Rather than unveiling all models in a single event, Apple is expected to divide the release into two separate launches—one in fall 2026 and another in spring 2027.
In the first phase, the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, a new iPhone 18 Air, and Apple’s first foldable iPhone are expected to take center stage at the company’s traditional September event. These premium offerings will target high-end users, much like Apple’s usual fall lineups.
The standard iPhone 18 and a more affordable variant, possibly called the iPhone 18e, are reportedly slated for a separate launch event in early 2027. This staggered release could signal a long-term shift toward separate events for flagship and budget models.
Manufacturing and Supply Chain Changes
Another significant development relates to Apple’s production plans. Beginning in 2026, the company aims to move testing and manufacturing for its more affordable iPhones to India. This shift is part of Apple’s broader initiative to diversify its supply chain and reduce dependency on Chinese factories—especially amid ongoing trade tensions and tariffs imposed during the Trump era.
The dual launch timeline may also benefit Apple operationally, helping the tech giant reduce strain on its production teams and optimize staffing across product cycles.
What to Expect from Apple’s First Foldable iPhone
Apple’s entry into the foldable market is expected to arrive in 2026 as part of the iPhone 18 series. Unlike Samsung’s flip-style phones, Apple is rumored to be taking a different route with a book-like design—similar to the Galaxy Z Fold.
The device may feature a 5.5-inch external display for quick tasks and a larger 7.8-inch internal screen when unfolded. This design would provide an expansive canvas for multitasking, entertainment, and productivity.
Durability appears to be a key focus. Apple is reportedly using liquid metal—a flexible alloy previously seen in SIM ejector tools—for the hinge mechanism, potentially reducing creasing and improving the device’s longevity.
Physically, the foldable iPhone is expected to be ultra-thin—about 4.5mm when open and 9mm when folded. To conserve space, Apple may replace Face ID with a Touch ID sensor embedded in the power button. Other rumored features include a titanium build, dual rear cameras, and a focus on premium materials.
On the software side, the larger screen will likely be leveraged for advanced AI-based features and seamless multitasking. The foldable iPhone could be marketed as an AI-first device, in line with Apple’s expanding push into artificial intelligence.
Pricing and Availability
While official details remain under wraps, industry analysts speculate the foldable iPhone could start above $2,000 (around Rs 1.74 lakh), making it the most expensive iPhone Apple has ever produced.
If Apple follows this two-phase release strategy, we may see the high-end iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, Air, and foldable models launch in September 2026, with the base iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e arriving a few months later in early 2027.
As always, until Apple confirms the details, these developments should be treated as speculative—but the shift in strategy and new product formats could mark a significant turning point for the iPhone lineup.
