Honda CBR650R e-Clutch Variant Confirmed for India

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India is preparing to introduce the e-Clutch-equipped version of the CBR650R in the Indian market this May. A new teaser shared on Honda’s social platforms hints at the launch, with the silhouette closely matching the current model, confirming it’s an updated variant rather than an all-new design.

This will mark the first time the e-Clutch system makes its way to an Indian-spec Honda two-wheeler. Although the technology has been available globally on both the CBR650R and its naked sibling, the CB650R, Indian models have so far been limited to a standard 6-speed manual gearbox. Honda had launched the updated versions of both motorcycles earlier in January 2025.

Honda e-Clutch System

First unveiled in October 2023, Honda’s e-Clutch system combines traits from manual clutches, quick-shifters, and the brand’s proven Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). The setup allows for clutch-free gear shifts and eliminates the need to use the clutch lever during starts or stops. However, the lever remains functional for those who prefer manual operation, with the system re-engaging automatically soon after.

The e-Clutch technology is lightweight, adding just around 2 kg to the bike, and is designed to retain the existing clutch and transmission hardware. Its operation is managed by an actuator with twin motors mounted within the engine casing, while clutch engagement is controlled through real-time parameters such as throttle input, gear position, engine speed, and shift pedal pressure. The system also adjusts ignition timing and fuel delivery during shifts to ensure smooth transitions.

Customisable Gear Shift Sensitivity

The e-Clutch system also brings in customisation. Riders can choose from three different gear shift sensitivities—hard, medium, and soft—for both upshifts and downshifts. If the bike is in a gear that’s too high for the current speed, the instrument cluster will prompt the rider to downshift. These features help deliver a balanced and intuitive riding experience, particularly useful in stop-and-go traffic or during spirited rides.

Not Honda’s First with Advanced Transmission Tech

The e-Clutch builds on Honda’s long-standing work in clutch innovation. The company already offers the DCT system in models like the Africa Twin, Gold Wing, and NT1100 in international markets—systems known for their reliability and rider convenience.

Price and Launch Expectations

The CBR650R e-Clutch is expected to command a slight premium over the standard model, which is currently priced at ₹9.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). However, given the minimal hardware additions, the price difference is unlikely to be significant. This addition will make the CBR650R even more appealing in the middleweight sportbike segment, where it competes with rivals like the Triumph Daytona 660 and Suzuki GSX-8R.
