The upcoming iPhone 17 lineup is already drawing attention months ahead of its expected launch in September 2025. While the overall design may not see major changes, the new models are likely to offer upgraded displays, better performance, and enhanced camera hardware.
iPhone 17 Series May Drop the “Plus” Model
Rumors suggest Apple may discontinue the “Plus” version in the iPhone 17 series due to weak demand. It could be replaced by a slimmer alternative, expected to be called the iPhone 17 Air. This change would shift the lineup to include the iPhone 17, 17 Air, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max.
Case Leaks Reveal Design Details
Tipster Majin Bu recently shared images of protective cases for all four models in the iPhone 17 series. These cases have already gone up for pre-order through direct messages on X (formerly Twitter), despite the official launch still being several months away. The leaked cases hint at notable design changes, particularly in the camera section.

Both the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max cases show large camera module cutouts, reinforcing earlier reports. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 and 17 Air appear to have smaller camera layouts, with the 17 Air case featuring a wide horizontal cutout placed high on the back panel—reminiscent of Google’s Pixel design.
Display and Performance Upgrades
For the first time, Apple is expected to bring its 120Hz ProMotion display technology to the standard iPhone 17. Previously limited to Pro models, this refresh rate upgrade will improve screen fluidity and responsiveness. The display will reportedly use Samsung-supplied LTPO OLED panels, which are known for their power efficiency. This could also pave the way for an always-on display, though it hasn’t been confirmed yet.
Camera Enhancements Across the Lineup
The iPhone 17 series is likely to introduce a new 24MP front camera across all variants—double the resolution of the 12MP selfie cameras on the iPhone 16 series. For the rear camera setup, the Pro models are expected to feature a triple 48MP sensor configuration for the first time in iPhone history. The iPhone 17 Air may come with a single 48MP rear camera.
