Volkswagen has officially launched the Golf GTI in India, marking a major move in its push towards the premium performance segment. Priced at Rs 53 lakh (ex-showroom), the Golf GTI arrives as a CBU import and is now the most expensive VW model on sale in the country.

This is the first time the globally popular Golf hatchback has been introduced to Indian buyers. The version launched is the Mk 8.5, and it follows the Polo GTI as the second GTI model to enter the Indian market. The initial batch of 150 units has already been sold out, with another 100 units to follow depending on demand.

Engine and Performance

Under the hood, the Golf GTI is powered by a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that produces 265 bhp and 370 Nm of torque. The engine is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and features paddle shifters. Power is sent to the front wheels via an electronically controlled locking differential. It can go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds and has a top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h.

Visually, the Golf GTI stands out with signature GTI touches including red brake calipers, dual exhausts, sporty bumpers, and GTI badging on the grille and doors. It rides on 18-inch alloy wheels and features Matrix LED headlamps, LED fog lights, and an illuminated VW logo. At the rear, it gets 3D-effect LED tail lights with animated turn signals and a roof spoiler.

Inside, the cabin is equipped with a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, ambient lighting, a head-up display, and triple-zone climate control. The GTI trim continues with red stitching on the steering wheel and seats, along with heated front seats and GTI-specific accents.

Color Options and Deliveries

The Golf GTI is available in four colors: Kings Red Metallic, Oryx White Pearl, Moonstone Grey, and Grenadilla Black Metallic. Deliveries are expected to begin in June 2025.

The Golf GTI will directly compete with the Mini Cooper S JCW in India. With this launch, Volkswagen aims to tap into the growing interest in high-performance hatchbacks among Indian buyers.
