Google Gemini can now automatically generate summaries for Gmail emails and threads. The AI-powered feature rolls out for Workspace and AI Premium users on Android and iOS.

Google has launched a new feature in Gmail that automatically generates summaries of emails and conversation threads using its Gemini AI technology. This update aims to help users quickly grasp the key points of longer email chains or messages with multiple replies, without needing to open and manually summarize each message.
Previously, Gmail users had to tap the “Summarize this email” button at the top of an email to access Gemini’s AI-generated summary. Now, this process is fully automatic, with summaries appearing at the top of email content for messages where Gemini detects a summary would be useful. These summaries dynamically update to include new information as the email conversation progresses.

Currently, the automatic summarization feature is only available in English and is rolling out gradually over the next 15 days. It will be accessible exclusively to Google Workspace subscribers, Google One AI Premium members, and customers using Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium. For emails that don’t trigger an automatic summary, users can still generate one manually by tapping the “Summarize this email” prompt.

This update applies to Gmail apps on Android and iOS. Additionally, Google announced similar Gemini-powered summaries are being introduced in Google Chat’s Home view and as a new summary block in Google Docs. Alongside this, Google’s AI research tool NotebookLM is enhancing its functionality with interactive Mind Maps to help users visualize connections between ideas.
