The upcoming Google Pixel 10 series is shaping up to bring meaningful upgrades to its camera hardware, with a new report from Android Headlines suggesting a telephoto camera with macro capabilities—essentially, a tele-macro setup. This new addition could significantly enhance close-up photography on the Pixel 10 lineup, offering users sharper and more detailed images.

Expected to launch on August 20, with availability starting August 28, the Pixel 10 family will reportedly feature a triple rear camera system. This includes a wide-angle primary lens, an ultrawide lens, and a new telephoto shooter capable of macro photography. According to the report, the telephoto sensor will offer 5x optical zoom along with the ability to capture macro shots, adding more versatility to the phone’s imaging capabilities.

The inclusion of macro functionality on the telephoto camera could improve image quality for close-up subjects. Telephoto lenses are typically known for better optics compared to ultrawide lenses, which means users can expect crisper details and improved color reproduction when shooting macros. Additionally, shooting from a slight distance ensures the phone doesn’t block light from reaching the subject—a common issue when using ultrawide cameras for macros.

That said, Google will reportedly retain the ultrawide lens with autofocus in the Pixel 10 series, just like in the Pixel 9 lineup. This means macro photography can be handled by both the ultrawide and telephoto cameras, and the phone is expected to intelligently switch between them depending on the subject’s distance. While the ultrawide lens may still be useful for extremely close subjects, the telephoto macro will likely deliver superior image quality for slightly farther ones.

Interestingly, this move mirrors recent trends in smartphone camera design. Other brands like Oppo and OnePlus have already introduced tele-macro lenses in their flagship devices, including the Oppo Find N5 and OnePlus 13.

In addition to the improved camera setup, the Pixel 10 series is also expected to debut with the new Tensor G5 chipset, manufactured by TSMC. This marks a shift from the Samsung-made chips used in previous models and could bring performance and efficiency improvements to the latest Pixels.

As the launch date nears, more details are expected to surface. But for now, it’s clear that Google is aiming to deliver a more advanced photography experience, especially for users who love shooting close-ups with clarity and precision.
