Google Rolls Out Gemini-Powered Search Live with Voice Input

Google has officially rolled out a new feature called Search Live, allowing users to talk and explore the web in real time using voice commands. Available exclusively in the U.S. for now, this experimental feature is part of AI Mode in Labs, accessible through the Google app on both Android and iOS platforms.

Search Live lets users engage in free-flowing voice conversations with Google Search. It’s designed for convenience, especially in situations like multitasking or when you’re on the move. With a simple tap on the new “Live” icon in the app, users can verbally ask questions and receive instant AI-generated audio responses. For example, you could ask, “What are some tips for preventing a linen dress from wrinkling in a suitcase?” and get a spoken answer, followed by another question like, “What should I do if it still wrinkles?”

Alongside the voice response, users will also see a set of helpful web links on their screens, making it easy to dive deeper into the topic if needed. Notably, Search Live continues to work in the background, allowing users to maintain a conversation with Google even while using other apps. There’s also an option to view the full text transcript of the interaction and continue the session via typing if preferred.

This feature is powered by a custom version of Gemini, Google’s AI model, enhanced with advanced voice processing capabilities. It uses the company’s query fan-out technique, which broadens search responses to include more diverse and relevant content from the web — giving users more opportunities to explore topics from different perspectives.

Additionally, Google has integrated a history feature for AI Mode, so users can revisit past Search Live conversations and pick up where they left off. It’s a helpful touch for those wanting to refer back to earlier interactions.

Google says this is just the beginning. In the coming months, the company plans to expand the capabilities of Search Live even further. One of the upcoming features includes using your smartphone’s camera during conversations, so Search can also respond to what you’re seeing — opening the door to more real-time, visual interactions with AI.

Search Live with voice is now visible via a dedicated icon beneath the search bar once users opt in to the AI Mode experiment in Labs.
