Maruti Suzuki Swift Celebrates 20 Years in India, Crosses 30 Lakh Sales Milestone

Maruti Suzuki is celebrating a major milestone as the Swift hatchback completes 20 years in the Indian market. First launched in May 2005, the Swift marked a bold shift for the country’s largest carmaker, introducing a sporty and youthful design that stood apart from the brand’s more conservative lineup at the time. Over the years, the Swift has not only redefined its segment but also built a loyal customer base, crossing the 30 lakh sales mark in India.

The Swift’s journey has been impressive across four generations. It surpassed 10 lakh unit sales within the first eight years of launch. The next 10 lakh came in just five years, and the 30 lakh milestone was achieved last year, just six years later. With a legacy spanning two decades, the Swift has evolved with each generation while staying true to its ‘fun-to-drive’ DNA.

The latest, fourth-generation Swift was introduced in 2024 and is currently priced between ₹6.49 lakh and ₹9.64 lakh (ex-showroom). The newest model carries forward the nameplate’s sporty appeal with a bold new exterior featuring a wrap-around character line, glossy black grille, and LED projector headlamps. On the inside, it continues to offer a driver-focused layout with a flat-bottom steering wheel, asymmetrical instrument cluster, and other performance-inspired touches.

Commenting on the occasion, Mr. Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer, Marketing and Sales at Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said, The Swift is an icon in its own right. Celebrated by over 3 million customers in India alone, the Swift is an expression of fun and freedom. The Swift has set new benchmarks over the years with every new model, improving on the inherent ‘fun-to-drive’ DNA. This ever so special nature of the Swift has ensured that nearly one out of every four Swift owners come back to buy another Swift. Today, it enjoys an admirable 31% market share in its segment, contributing to over 10% of MSIL sales. On this special 20-year anniversary, we would like to thank all our customers for their unwavering love for brand Swift.

The Swift’s evolution over the years is a testament to its strong product value and customer appeal. The second generation, launched in 2011, focused on making the car lighter and more agile. In 2018, the third generation introduced high-tech features aimed at meeting changing consumer expectations. The 2024 model, dubbed the Epic New Swift, brought a redesigned exterior and the all-new Z-Series engine, engineered with a focus on sustainable mobility.

On the safety front, the Swift continues to meet modern standards through Maruti Suzuki’s ARENA Safety Shield package. It includes six airbags, Electronic Stability Program+ (ESP®), ABS with EBD, Hill Hold Control, reverse parking sensors, and seat belt reminders for all occupants. The car also comes with a 3-year/1,00,000 km standard warranty.

As the Swift completes 20 years, it remains one of India’s most iconic and best-selling hatchbacks. Its mix of dynamic styling, strong brand value, and engaging drive continues to resonate with buyers across generations. With over 30 lakh customers in India, the Swift has firmly established itself as a household name in the country’s automotive landscape.
