Google AI Mode Now Available for Multimodal Search in India

Google has officially brought its most advanced search experience, AI Mode, to India. First introduced as an experimental feature in the U.S. earlier this year, AI Mode is now rolling out to Indian users via Google Labs, starting with support in English. This marks a major step forward in how people can interact with Search, especially for handling complex, multi-layered queries.

AI Mode leverages Google’s custom version of Gemini 2.5 and combines powerful AI capabilities with Search’s core strengths, enabling users to get detailed, context-rich answers to questions that would typically require multiple searches. Whether you’re planning a trip, comparing products, or learning a new skill, AI Mode is designed to give you more helpful, reasoning-based responses in a single query.

Google says early testers have already shown a shift in how they use Search with AI Mode, often typing queries that are two to three times longer than normal. For example, a user might ask something like, “My kids are 4 and 7 with a lot of energy. Suggest creative ways to keep them active indoors on hot days, using minimal space and no expensive toys.” In response, AI Mode can break the question into subtopics, search across the web in real-time, and present a structured, comprehensive answer—something traditional search engines struggle to do in one go.

What makes this tool unique is Google’s query fan-out technique, which dissects complex questions and runs multiple searches at once to retrieve the most relevant, up-to-date content. Along with helpful summaries, AI Mode also provides links for deeper exploration, allowing users to go beyond basic answers and truly understand a topic.

For Indian users, voice and visual search are key, and Google has built AI Mode to support both. You can tap the microphone to ask questions using voice or use Google Lens within AI Mode to snap a photo or upload an image. For example, taking a picture of a plant and asking, “What plant is this and how do I take care of it?” will result in AI Mode identifying the plant and returning tailored care instructions, complete with relevant links. You can also follow up with related questions like “Where should I place it indoors for better growth?”

Google says the feature is deeply integrated with its existing knowledge infrastructure—including the Knowledge Graph, real-time information, and product databases—making it easier to get factual, useful results. It’s also designed to help people discover content from across the web, supporting creators and publishers by linking directly to their pages when appropriate.

The company emphasizes that AI Mode isn’t meant to replace traditional search results, but to complement them. In instances where Google isn’t confident about the answer, the system will simply display a standard list of web results. This balance, according to Google, is key to maintaining quality and factual accuracy, while continuing to innovate.

AI Mode is also a major evolution from AI Overviews, which are already used by more than 1.5 billion people every month. In markets like the U.S. and India, these overviews have increased search engagement by over 10% for complex queries. AI Mode builds on that foundation, offering even deeper reasoning and multimodal understanding, making it more capable for advanced and exploratory search tasks.

Currently, AI Mode is available in India as an experimental feature within Google Labs, accessible through the Google Search app on both Android and iOS. While it only supports English for now, Google is expected to expand language support and functionality based on user feedback over time.
