De Tomaso Automobili has officially revealed the production-spec version of its much-awaited P72 supercar. Founded in 1959 by Argentine-born racer Alejandro De Tomaso, the Italian brand is known for blending motorsport spirit with Italian craftsmanship. It created icons like the Pantera, and now returns with the striking P72. First showcased as a concept at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed, the P72 pays tribute to the brand’s legacy while targeting purists seeking a raw, analogue driving experience.

Inspired by the Past, Built for the Future

The De Tomaso P72 takes inspiration from the 1965 De Tomaso P70, which was the result of a collaboration between Alejandro De Tomaso and Carroll Shelby. Its design is heavily influenced by the aesthetics of the 1960s, featuring smooth, flowing bodywork that blends classic curves with modern engineering.

Now shown in production form, the P72 is ready to hit the road, staying true to the original concept that aimed to revive the brand’s legacy with a focus on mechanical purity and emotional connection.

All-New Carbon Fibre Architecture

Underneath the P72 is a newly developed carbon fibre chassis built from the ground up. The structure features a one-piece carbon monocoque with no bonded sections, increasing strength and reducing weight. This architecture also helps achieve a low center of gravity and ideal weight distribution.

The platform was engineered to precisely control suspension geometry and overall balance. It also supports the low-slung seating position and centralised powertrain placement. Covering the chassis is a full carbon fibre body, offered in a selection of heritage paint finishes or exposed carbon fiber.

Classic Interior, No Screens

Inside, the P72 takes a completely analogue approach. There are no digital displays or infotainment systems. Instead, it features traditional analogue dials, custom-designed switchgear, and a cabin built around the driver. One of the standout elements is the exposed gear linkage shifter—designed to be both functional and artistic—connected to a six-speed manual gearbox.

Materials like hand-stitched leather and individually milled aluminium components dominate the cabin. These parts are finished in bead-blasted, hand-brushed, or hand-polished textures, emphasizing craftsmanship over technology.

Power and Performance

Powering the P72 is a hand-built 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine. It delivers 700 hp and 820 Nm of torque. The engine features forged internals and a newly developed De Tomaso supercharger. The power is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox with short gear ratios aimed at delivering strong mid-range acceleration rather than high top speeds.

A 1960s-style exhaust header design ensures the V8 engine sounds as good as it performs. There are no drive modes or electronic assists—just pure mechanical control.

Chassis and Suspension

The car uses a push-rod suspension setup paired with manually adjustable 3-way dampers, giving drivers the ability to fine-tune handling characteristics. The aerodynamic profile has been kept sleek and simple, focusing on low drag and balanced performance.

Limited Production and Launch Timeline

The P72 shown is a production-spec internal unit, separate from the 72 customer cars that De Tomaso plans to deliver. Each of the 72 units will be custom-built with individual finishes based on the buyer’s preferences.

De Tomaso will begin customer deliveries of the P72 in late 2025.

A Step Forward for the Brand

According to CEO Norman Choi, “The P72 is our promise to bring De Tomaso back to life. This production version captures our core values: timeless design, mechanical driving feel, and true craftsmanship.”
