Toyota Fortuner is set to launch with a diesel mild-hybrid powertrain next month in India, boosting performance and fuel efficiency. Production has already started for the upcoming model.

Toyota is preparing to introduce the Fortuner with a 48V mild-hybrid diesel powertrain in India in 2025. Production has already commenced, signaling an imminent launch. This update aims to enhance performance and fuel efficiency in the popular full-size SUV segment.
Powertrain and Performance
The upcoming Fortuner hybrid will feature a 2.8-litre four-cylinder GD series diesel engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system. This setup, similar to the Fortuner MHEV available in markets like South Africa and Australia, provides an additional 16hp and 42Nm of torque, resulting in a total output of 201hp and 500Nm. Toyota claims that this configuration improves fuel efficiency by approximately 5% compared to the standard diesel model. The system includes a belt-integrated starter generator, a 48V lithium-ion battery, and a DC-DC converter, contributing to smoother engine restarts, regenerative braking, and a subtle torque boost during acceleration.
Features and Variants

The Fortuner mild-hybrid is expected to be offered in both 4×2 and 4×4 configurations, equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission as standard. Notably, the idle start-stop function, previously introduced in 2021 and later discontinued, will make a return in the 4×4 variants. In terms of features, the hybrid Fortuner will likely include the Toyota Safety Sense suite, offering advanced driver-assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and automatic emergency braking. Additional features may encompass a 360-degree camera system and minor interior enhancements.
Design and Aesthetics
Visually, the Fortuner mild-hybrid is anticipated to resemble the Fortuner Legender currently available in India, with subtle distinctions such as a ’48V’ badge and potentially new color options. The SUV is expected to retain its bold front grille, LED headlamps, and rugged alloy wheels, maintaining its commanding road presence.
Launch Timeline
The hybrid variants are likely to be positioned at the top end of the Fortuner range. Full pricing and variant details will be announced closer to launch.
Toyota continues to see strong results in India through its partnership with Maruti Suzuki and its hybrid portfolio, including models like the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Innova. The upcoming Fortuner hybrid could further strengthen its presence in the premium SUV segment.
