Jeep Commander (Meridian) now features a new 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine with 200 bhp and 450 Nm torque in Brazil.

The Jeep Meridian, known as the Commander in Brazil, has received a more powerful 2.2-litre diesel engine in the Brazilian market. However, this upgrade is currently exclusive to the top-spec Overland variant and seems unlikely to be introduced in India anytime soon.
Jeep Commander (Meridian) – 2.2-Litre Turbo Diesel
The new 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine delivers 200 bhp and 450 Nm of peak torque. It is mated to a 9-speed automatic gearbox and features a 4×4 drivetrain. This upgrade replaces the earlier 2.0-litre diesel engine in the Brazilian-spec Commander Overland, which produced 170 bhp and 380 Nm. With the new engine, the SUV offers improved performance, especially in off-road conditions that are common in regions like Brazil.

Jeep has made other technical changes to accommodate the more powerful engine. These include a new ARLA 32 emission control exhaust system, larger front brake discs for improved stopping power, and revised gear ratios. Each of the nine gears now features a 14% longer ratio to handle the increased torque. As a result, the 0–100 km/h sprint time has improved to 9.7 seconds, compared to 11.6 seconds with the older 2.0-litre unit.
Despite the power bump, the new engine still delivers decent fuel efficiency—10.4 km/l in city conditions and 15.5 km/l on the highway. This is a noticeable improvement over the previous claim of 13.4 km/l.
Petrol Engine Option Also Available
Alongside the new diesel variant, the Commander in Brazil continues to offer a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 268 bhp and 400 Nm of torque. This engine is also paired with a 9-speed automatic gearbox and is available in premium models like the Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee.
Will the 2.2L Diesel Engine Come to India?
At present, there’s no official confirmation regarding the introduction of the 2.2-litre diesel engine in India. The Jeep Meridian currently sold in India continues with the familiar 2.0-litre Multijet II turbo diesel engine, delivering 168 bhp and 350 Nm. This engine is locally manufactured and shared with several other popular models like the Jeep Compass, Tata Harrier, Tata Safari, MG Hector, and Hector Plus.
Introducing the 2.2-litre engine in India would require investment in retooling, homologation, and compliance with BS6 Phase-2 norms, likely driving up the costs. For now, Jeep may focus on updating features or trim options for the Meridian rather than changing the powertrain.
Jeep Meridian in India
In the Indian market, the Jeep Meridian is priced between Rs 24.99 lakh and Rs 38.79 lakh (ex-showroom) and competes with rivals such as the Toyota Fortuner, MG Gloster, and Skoda Kodiaq.
