Mahindra XEV 9e and BE 6 Likely to Get Hybrid Powertrain

Mahindra plans hybrid versions of its XEV 9e and BE 6 SUVs with a 1.2L petrol range-extender engine. Based on the INGLO platform, both models will be re-engineered to accommodate the hybrid setup.

Mahindra is reportedly preparing to introduce hybrid powertrains for two of its upcoming electric SUVs—the XEV 9e and BE 6. Both models, which were originally developed as pure-electric vehicles on the brand’s INGLO platform, are expected to be offered with a range-extender hybrid setup that could help the carmaker tap into a broader customer base.

As per report, Mahindra is working on re-engineering the INGLO skateboard architecture to support hybrid propulsion. The updated configuration will likely incorporate a 1.2-litre petrol engine that will serve as a generator, charging the battery which in turn powers the electric motors. In this setup, the petrol motor won’t directly drive the wheels but will operate purely as a power source for the battery pack—characteristic of a range-extender hybrid system.

While Mahindra had previously distanced itself from hybrids, the company now appears to be adapting its strategy. EV adoption is growing at a slower pace than expected, and hybrid models have gained steady traction in the Indian market, especially in the midsize SUV segment. In May 2025, Mahindra sold 2,604 electric vehicles, mostly from its born-electric lineup, but the brand is aiming for a target of 5,000 monthly EV sales—a goal that the introduction of hybrids could help achieve.

The XEV 9e and BE 6 are both expected to be heavily re-engineered to accommodate internal combustion components, which weren’t part of their original EV-centric designs. Despite the added complexity, the new hybrid variants could even be priced below their ICE counterparts, offering customers an appealing middle ground between conventional petrol/diesel and full-electric vehicles.

The move also puts Mahindra in line with other OEMs such as Maruti Suzuki, Toyota, Hyundai, Kia, Renault, and Nissan, all of whom are reportedly planning hybrid launches for the Indian market. Mahindra’s decision signals a clear shift in approach as hybrid powertrains gain relevance, especially with infrastructure for electric mobility still developing in several regions.

Interestingly, Mahindra is also evaluating hybrid options for the XUV 3XO, though the setup there is expected to be different. Instead of a range extender, the 3XO may get a series-parallel hybrid system, where both the 1.2L turbo-petrol engine and the electric motor can independently or jointly power the vehicle, helping improve overall efficiency.

While an official launch timeline hasn’t been announced yet, the hybrid variants of the XEV 9e and BE 6 are expected to play a crucial role in Mahindra’s broader electrification roadmap, offering a practical alternative for buyers still on the fence about going fully electric.
