Maruti Suzuki is set to introduce an all-new SUV to strengthen its presence in the highly competitive mid-size SUV segment. Likely to revive the ‘Escudo’ nameplate—familiar to global markets as the Japanese version of the Vitara—the upcoming model is now taking shape for India. Recently surfaced spy images provide our first real glimpse into what the new SUV could look like ahead of its expected launch around Diwali 2025.

Positioned between the Brezza and the Grand Vitara, the Escudo is expected to strike a fine balance between affordability and size. Internally codenamed Y17, this model could be based on the same Global C platform as the Grand Vitara, although slight revisions to the chassis—such as an extended wheelbase—might help offer better interior space.

While the test mule is still under camouflage, the spy shots reveal production-spec headlights and hints of a revised front fascia. Compared to the curvier Grand Vitara, the Escudo appears to adopt a boxier stance, possibly with a more upright front grille and cleaner body lines. This aligns with Maruti’s intent to appeal to a wider Arena showroom audience.

Powering the new SUV will likely be Maruti’s familiar 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, seen in models like the Brezza and Ertiga. Both manual (5-speed) and automatic (6-speed torque converter) gearbox options are expected. As with other Maruti models, the car is expected to include the mild-hybrid system, and a CNG variant could also be offered. A full hybrid system, however, is unlikely to keep costs competitive.

On the inside, we’re expecting a revised dashboard layout, possibly with a larger touchscreen infotainment unit, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a fully digital instrument cluster. While the electronic parking brake might be skipped, premium touches like a panoramic sunroof and ventilated seats could be included to meet market expectations.

In terms of safety, the Escudo might come loaded with features such as six airbags, ABS with EBD, hill hold assist, all-wheel disc brakes, and a 360-degree camera system. It may also become Maruti’s second vehicle to offer ADAS features, following the e-Vitara, further elevating its appeal.

The spy shots also give a closer look at new alloy wheel designs, hinting at possible variations between trim levels. No major changes appear on the sides or rear, but final production details could evolve before launch.

Expected to launch around September 2025, the Escudo is likely to be priced at around ₹10 lakh (ex-showroom).

Once launched, the Escudo will compete with the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun, Honda Elevate, and MG Astor, making it a key player in the ever-crowded compact SUV arena.
