New Toyota SUV Design Patent Hints at FJ Cruiser Comeback

Toyota’s plans for a new compact off-road SUV appear to be gaining traction, as a recently surfaced design patent reveals what could be the spiritual successor to the iconic FJ Cruiser. The design, filed at the Philippine patent office back in January 2024, points toward a boxy, rugged SUV that fits neatly into Toyota’s growing family of capable 4×4 vehicles.

The patent image showcases a bold, upright stance with a strong off-road character. Notably, the SUV features thick body cladding, squared proportions, and a tailgate-mounted spare wheel—hallmarks of traditional adventure-ready design. The upright windshield and minimalistic front end, with no visible fog lamps or roof racks, suggest functionality over flash. The SUV also sports a five-door layout, making it more practical than the older three-door FJ Cruiser.

This design is reminiscent of the Compact Cruiser EV concept Toyota revealed in 2021. While the concept was purely electric, the upcoming production SUV is expected to run on conventional petrol and hybrid engines. Reports suggest that the platform could be the IMV-0 ladder-frame chassis, which currently underpins the Toyota Hilux Champ in Thailand and Tamaraw in the Philippines.

At the rear, the SUV’s chunky bumper and spare tyre setup offer a rugged appeal. Compared to the EV concept, the patent version looks closer to production with practical touches like conventional rearview mirrors and wraparound tail lamps.

Toyota has also trademarked the ‘Land Cruiser FJ’ name in Japan, hinting that the legendary FJ Cruiser badge could be revived for this model. Enthusiasts would likely welcome this move, considering the original FJ Cruiser’s popularity among off-road fans during its production run from 2006 to 2022.

Under the hood, engine options could include a 2.7-litre naturally aspirated petrol motor mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox, along with a four-wheel-drive system. Toyota may also offer 2.4-litre and 2.8-litre diesel variants depending on regional demand. If launched, the new SUV would sit below the Fortuner in Toyota’s global SUV lineup.

While Toyota hasn’t confirmed the SUV’s name or full specifications yet, the new model could see a global debut by late 2025 or early 2026. It remains to be seen if the new FJ Cruiser will come to India, but considering the rising interest in lifestyle off-roaders—evident from the demand for the Fortuner, Thar Roxx, and Maruti Jimny—it could be a strong addition to the market.
