Tata Motors confirms petrol variants of the Harrier and Safari SUVs, set to launch in FY2026. Powered by a new 1.5-litre TGDi engine, these models will offer manual and DCT options. Harrier EV to debut first on June 3.

Tata Motors is set to broaden its SUV lineup with the launch of petrol variants for the Harrier and Safari. The announcement confirms that these new models will arrive within the current financial year (FY2026), marking a major step in Tata’s powertrain diversification strategy.
New 1.5-Litre TGDi Petrol Engine to Power Both SUVs
Both the Harrier and Safari will be powered by Tata’s newly developed 1.5-litre turbocharged gasoline direct injection (TGDi) engine. The four-cylinder unit produces 168 bhp and 280 Nm of peak torque, and will be available with a six-speed manual gearbox as well as a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
This new engine is a significant upgrade over Tata’s existing 1.2-litre TGDi unit, currently offered on the upcoming Curvv, which delivers 118 bhp and 170 Nm. By introducing a more powerful petrol option, Tata is aiming to make the Harrier and Safari more accessible, particularly for customers looking for an alternative to diesel. Prices for the petrol variants are expected to undercut their diesel counterparts by around Rs 1 lakh, depending on the variant and gearbox selection.

A First for Second-Gen Harrier and Safari
This will be the first time that the second-generation Harrier and Safari models are being offered with a petrol engine. Until now, both SUVs have relied solely on a diesel powertrain. The move reflects Tata’s growing focus on catering to a wider customer base, especially as consumer preferences shift toward petrol and electric alternatives in urban markets.

This petrol powertrain update is also the most significant change for both models since they received a mid-cycle refresh in late 2023. The introduction of petrol variants brings more variety to Tata’s SUV portfolio, making the Harrier and Safari more competitive in a segment that’s seeing rising demand for multi-powertrain options.
Harrier EV to Arrive First
Before the petrol-powered Harrier and Safari make their debut, Tata will launch the all-electric Harrier EV on June 3. The EV is expected to deliver a range of around 500 km on a single charge and will debut Tata’s new dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. It will also likely retain most of the features seen on the ICE version of the SUV, positioning it as the brand’s new flagship in the EV space.

Expanding the Powertrain Portfolio
With the addition of petrol engines and the upcoming Harrier EV, Tata Motors is doubling down on its promise to offer a broader range of powertrain options across its lineup. From diesel to petrol and now EVs, the carmaker is aiming to meet the evolving needs of Indian buyers and strengthen its position in the midsize and premium SUV segments.
