Tata Safari test mule spotted in Delhi NCR, possibly testing a new 180 bhp 2.0L diesel engine or the upcoming 1.5L Turbo GDI petrol engine. Expected updates could enhance performance and pricing.

Tata Motors seems to be moving ahead with its powertrain upgrades as a camouflaged test mule of the Safari SUV was recently spotted on the roads in Delhi NCR. The heavily covered prototype hints at ongoing powertrain evaluations, possibly linked to Tata’s recent acquisition of the rights to develop and modify Stellantis’ 2.0L FAM B diesel engine.
Possible 180 bhp Diesel Tune in the Works
Currently, the Harrier and Safari are powered by the 2.0L FAM B diesel engine that produces 170 bhp and 350 Nm of torque. This engine is also found in vehicles like the Jeep Compass, Jeep Meridian, and MG Hector twins. Until now, Tata required approvals from Stellantis for any modifications to this engine. However, with the new rights secured, Tata can now independently develop and tune the engine to suit its needs.
There’s strong speculation that Tata is working on a more powerful 180 bhp version of this diesel engine, with torque expected to go up to around 380 Nm. The test mule seen recently could be running this updated setup. However, this is yet to be officially confirmed.
Could It Be the New 1.5L Turbo Petrol?
Another possibility is that this test vehicle is equipped with Tata’s upcoming 1.5L Turbo GDI petrol engine. This engine has been seen testing with the Harrier multiple times and is expected to deliver around 170 bhp and 280 Nm. It is likely to be offered with both a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

With the introduction of a petrol engine, Tata could offer more attractive entry-level pricing for both Harrier and Safari. This is especially beneficial in regions like Delhi, where diesel vehicle usage is restricted due to regulatory norms. A petrol option would help improve sales in such markets.

Exterior and Interior Observations
The test mule spotted was wearing full camouflage and was fitted with smaller 17-inch alloy wheels, hinting that it could be a lower trim variant under development. The mismatched wheel colors are typical for test vehicles. Visually, the prototype retains the current Safari’s design elements, including the front fascia and lighting setup, which continue to give it a bold road presence.
A brief look inside the cabin revealed what appeared to be a new panoramic screen that integrates the infotainment system with the digital instrument cluster. While the image wasn’t very clear, it indicates that the updated Safari could receive some interior upgrades as well.

What to Expect
With either a more powerful diesel variant or the introduction of a turbo-petrol engine, Tata Motors seems set to expand the appeal of the Safari lineup. These updates are likely aimed at better competing with rivals like the Mahindra XUV700 and MG Hector Plus. An official announcement is yet to be made, but testing activity suggests that Tata is gearing up for a refreshed Safari in the near future.
