Tesla has officially launched the Model Y electric SUV in India, marking the brand’s much-anticipated debut in the country. The Model Y is priced at ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom) for the standard rear-wheel-drive (RWD) variant, while the Long Range RWD version costs ₹67.89 lakh. With bookings now open and deliveries scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2025, this launch sets the stage for Tesla’s entry into the Indian electric vehicle market. The company has also inaugurated its first dealership in Mumbai.

The Model Y is available in two variants — both rear-wheel-drive — and comes with a range of up to 622 km on a single charge in the Long Range version, according to the WLTP cycle. The standard RWD model offers a range of 500 km. The standard variant uses a 60 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, known for safety and efficiency, while the Long Range variant is equipped with a 75 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery. Both versions have a top speed of 201 kmph. Acceleration is impressive as well, with the RWD model doing 0-100 kmph in 5.9 seconds and the Long Range variant achieving the same in 5.6 seconds.

Tesla has not yet introduced the dual-motor all-wheel-drive or Performance versions in India. However, both India-spec variants support fast charging up to 250 kW, allowing a 10 to 80 percent charge in under 30 minutes. Tesla claims the Model Y can regain up to 267 km of range in just 15 minutes using a Supercharger.

In terms of design, the Model Y follows Tesla’s global styling language with a coupe-like silhouette, flush door handles, and a clean, minimalist aesthetic. The cabin reflects the same approach, featuring a large 15.4-inch touchscreen at the center that controls almost all functions, including media, navigation, climate control, and drive modes. There are no physical buttons or traditional instrument clusters. The dashboard has a soft-touch finish with a horizontal strip of ambient lighting running across.

The interior is offered in an all-black theme as standard, while a black-and-white dual-tone option is available at an extra cost of ₹95,000. The centre console is wide and includes covered storage compartments and dual wireless charging pads. Rear passengers get reclining seats and their own 8-inch screen for entertainment and vehicle controls. The Model Y also features a 9-speaker audio system, automatic climate control, an air purifier, and powered front trunk access.

Tesla has also packed in a comprehensive list of safety features including seven airbags, a 360-degree surround-view camera, built-in dashcam, and various driver assistance technologies. The ADAS suite includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and blind-spot monitoring. Buyers can opt for Tesla’s full self-driving capability at an additional cost of ₹6 lakh.

Customers can reserve the Model Y by submitting a token amount of ₹22,220. A follow-up payment of ₹3 lakh is required within a week to confirm the booking. The SUV is being offered in six exterior colours, and comes well-equipped even in the base variant. Competing against premium electric crossovers like the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Model Y brings a strong blend of performance, tech, and range, making it an appealing choice for buyers in the luxury EV segment.
