Volvo Cars will be the first to offer Google’s Gemini AI Assistant in vehicles with Google built-in, enhancing in-car experiences and leading Android Automotive OS innovation.

Volvo Cars has strengthened its collaboration with Google to bring a new wave of digital innovations to its vehicles. Announced at Google I/O 2025, the partnership now includes the integration of Google Gemini, the tech giant’s latest conversational AI, into Volvo’s lineup of cars with Google built-in. The partnership also sees Volvo becoming one of Google’s reference hardware platforms for future Android Automotive OS development.
This move means Volvo drivers will be among the first to experience Gemini in the car, a next-generation AI assistant designed to enhance in-car interactions through more natural conversations. From composing and translating messages to answering questions about the car’s features or the destination, Gemini is expected to reduce distractions and make the driving experience more intuitive.
“Drivers can talk to Gemini naturally to get things done more safely and easily while keeping their attention on the road,” Google said during the demonstration of the system in the all-electric Volvo EX90.
Gemini will replace the existing Google Assistant in Volvo models later this year.

The expanded partnership goes beyond just Gemini. Volvo Cars will now serve as one of Google’s lead development platforms for Android Automotive OS. This means that Volvo vehicles will be the testing ground for new features and updates before they’re rolled out to the wider automotive industry.

We’re excited to deepen this partnership, accelerating the pace of innovation that will not only improve the driving experience for Volvo customers but also set new benchmarks for the automotive industry.“

Alwin Bakkenes, Head of Global Software Engineering at Volvo Cars, added, “We strive to deliver human-centric technology, and a stunning customer experience is an essential part of this. Through this partnership with Google, we are able to bring the very latest features and capabilities from the leading consumer ecosystem into our products first. With our expanding partnership, we’re collaborating on cutting-edge solutions that shape the future of connected cars.”
