Volvo revives the XC70 as a plug-in hybrid SUV with a 39.6 kWh battery and up to 245 km of electric range.

Volvo has officially revived the XC70, this time transforming it into a plug-in hybrid SUV built for today’s electric-first era. Last seen in 2016, the original XC70 was known as a rugged crossover wagon. The updated version, however, steps into a more refined role—featuring advanced hybrid technology, modern styling, and an all-new platform.
Return of a Nameplate with a Modern Twist
Set to debut in China in September 2025, the new XC70 marks a significant evolution for the nameplate. Volvo is positioning the SUV between the XC60 and XC90, targeting drivers looking for a premium crossover with a blend of electric efficiency and long-distance versatility. While China will be the first market to get the XC70, the company is planning a broader rollout in other regions in the future.
New Platform and EX90-Inspired Design
The redesigned XC70 is built on Volvo’s Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA), a new platform designed to support large battery systems and hybrid drivetrains. The architecture not only enhances driving dynamics but also allows for better space management and future tech upgrades.

Visually, the XC70 reflects Volvo’s latest design language. It comes with “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlamps, a sleek closed-off grille with active shutters to improve airflow, and flush-fitting door handles for reduced drag. The headlamps are integrated directly into the bumper, and the frameless mirrors add a cleaner silhouette. The design shares similarities with the EX90 flagship SUV and is likely influenced by the Lynk & Co 08, a model from Volvo’s parent company Geely.

Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain with Class-Leading EV Range
Powering the XC70 is a plug-in hybrid setup that pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a large 39.6 kWh battery. This allows the SUV to drive up to 245 kilometers in electric-only mode under CLTC test conditions—making it Volvo’s most capable PHEV to date in terms of pure EV range.

While exact output figures for the electric motor haven’t been shared yet, the internal combustion engine alone produces 160 bhp. Combined with the electric power, the total driving range is expected to be around 1,200 kilometers, offering excellent flexibility for both daily urban use and long-distance travel.

Targeted for a Growing PHEV Market
Volvo is entering a highly competitive mid-size SUV segment with the new XC70. By focusing on extended electric range, aerodynamic efficiency, and premium design, the brand is aiming to attract buyers who may be transitioning from traditional ICE vehicles to hybrid or electric options. The model’s placement between the XC60 and XC90 also offers a new choice for those who want space and comfort without going to the full size of the XC90.

Outlook and Global Expansion
Although the XC70 will launch first in China, Volvo is expected to introduce it to global markets soon after. The company may utilize its U.S. manufacturing plant in South Carolina to produce the model for export, which could help it bypass international trade barriers.
