Skype has officially been shut down by Microsoft as of May 5. Users can now migrate to Microsoft Teams with their data and contacts. Data export available until January 2026.

Skype’s journey has come to an end, as Microsoft officially shuts down the long-standing communication platform on May 5. Existing users can now switch to Microsoft Teams (free), with a smooth migration process that carries over Skype credentials, contacts, and chat history. Microsoft is also allowing users to export their data until January 2026, after which all stored information will be deleted permanently.
The decision to retire Skype is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to simplify its consumer communication services. According to the company, this move will help them “streamline our free consumer communications offerings so we can more easily adapt to customer needs.”
Limitations on Teams Compared to Skype
While Microsoft Teams (free) inherits several key features from Skype, it also brings some limitations. Group video calls are capped at 60 minutes, and Teams doesn’t support pay-as-you-go calling or SMS services that Skype Credit previously enabled.
A Look Back at Skype’s Legacy
Launched in 2003, Skype quickly became a pioneer in voice over IP (VoIP) technology, allowing users worldwide to make free or low-cost calls over the internet. Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011, and the platform continued to be widely used for both personal and professional communication for over a decade.
Skype’s influence shaped how people communicated online, offering video calls, voice chats, file sharing, and messaging long before the rise of current-day apps.
What’s Next for Users?
Microsoft has been offering assistance during the transition, enabling users to move to Teams using their existing Skype login. Teams includes features like group chat, voice and video calls, calendar integration, and community channels, aimed at replacing Skype as the go-to communication platform.
Users who do not wish to switch immediately can still export their data, including messages and contact lists, until early 2026.
Alternatives to Consider
For those seeking features beyond Teams, alternatives include:
- Zoom: Offers video conferencing with up to 100 participants, screen sharing, whiteboards, and meeting recording.
- Google Meet: Available for free with a Google account; supports meetings of up to 100 participants with time limitations on the free tier.
