vivo has officially introduced its latest foldable flagship, the X Fold5, in China, bringing a host of industry-first innovations and top-tier hardware to the foldable phone segment. With a refined hinge design, next-gen display panels, extreme durability ratings, and powerful internals, the X Fold5 looks to set a new benchmark for foldables in 2024.

The phone features a large 8.03-inch 2K+ LTPO AMOLED main display with up to 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and 4,500 nits peak brightness, ensuring vibrant visuals in all lighting conditions. Complementing it is a 6.53-inch FHD+ LTPO AMOLED cover screen, also offering 120Hz refresh rate and the same high brightness levels. Both panels support Dolby Vision, making media consumption on either screen a premium experience.

At the core of the X Fold5 is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, backed by up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage options up to 1TB. The device is cooled by a large 20,762mm² VC chamber with graphite for effective heat dissipation during intense performance tasks. OriginOS 5, based on Android 15, powers the phone with a smooth and customizable software experience.

Camera performance on the vivo X Fold5 is also flagship-grade. It sports a 50MP primary sensor (Sony IMX921) with optical image stabilization and an f/1.57 aperture. This is joined by a 50MP ultra-wide-angle lens and a 50MP telephoto periscope camera with Zeiss optics. On the front, both the inner and outer displays house 20MP selfie cameras, ensuring sharp image quality for video calls and selfies alike.

One of the standout features of the X Fold5 is its unprecedented durability. It is the first foldable in the industry to achieve a combination of IPX8, IPX9, IPX9+ water resistance, and IP5X dust protection. vivo claims the phone can survive high-pressure hot water jets at up to 80°C and still operate normally in freezing temperatures as low as -20°C, thanks to its antifreeze design.

Connectivity has also received attention, with vivo collaborating with Qualcomm to implement a dual-screen enhanced antenna system. This unique layout improves signal strength by 36% when the device is folded and allows each screen to maintain independent signal operation when unfolded. The phone is optimized for seamless video conferencing even on high-speed trains, with vivo stating 99% smooth performance during Tencent Conference calls on the Beijing–Shanghai High-Speed Railway.

Another highlight is its interoperability with Apple devices. The X Fold5 is the first Android phone to connect with Apple Watch, allowing users to answer calls, receive messages, and sync health data directly to vivo’s health app. It also supports AirPods and enables full access to Mac file systems, drag-and-drop file management, and even acts as an extended screen for Mac, making it highly appealing to users in mixed-device ecosystems.

Battery life is equally impressive. The X Fold5 houses a 6000mAh “blue ocean” battery, co-developed with CATL, using next-generation silicon negative electrode and semi-solid-state battery technologies. This enables a 13% energy density improvement at room temperature and up to 20% improvement in cold conditions, allowing operation at extreme temperatures down to -30°C. Charging is handled by 80W wired fast charging, 40W wireless charging, and reverse wireless support.
