YouTube Shorts Gets Google Lens Integration in Beta

YouTube is rolling out a new feature that brings Google Lens integration to Shorts, offering users an easier way to find more information about what they see in videos. This new tool, now in beta, allows viewers to pause a Short and use Google Lens to search the screen for objects, places, or text.

The feature works through a shortcut in the top menu while watching a Short. Once the video is paused, users can tap the Lens icon to activate visual search. They can either draw on the screen, tap an object, or highlight text to learn more. A translate button also appears, letting users translate any on-screen text instantly.

Google confirmed that this update is rolling out on both Android and iOS. However, it currently only works with Shorts that do not contain shopping affiliate links or paid product placements. For now, Lens search results remain ad-free during the beta phase.

How to Use Google Lens in YouTube Shorts:

  1. Open the YouTube app and go to the Shorts tab.
  2. Play a Short and tap the screen to pause it.
  3. Tap the “Lens” icon in the top menu.
  4. Select an object by tapping, drawing a circle, or highlighting it.
  5. To translate on-screen text, use the “Translate” button in the lower right.
  6. Close the results by tapping “X” or swiping down on the panel.

The first time users activate Lens, a terms and conditions message will appear. It can be dismissed by tapping anywhere on the screen.

With this integration, users can get quick context on anything they see in a Short, such as identifying a landmark, recognizing a product, or translating foreign text, all without leaving the app.

YouTube says the feature is rolling out to all viewers this week, giving more people access to smarter visual search tools directly inside Shorts.
